“Wanderer, your footsteps are the road, and nothing more; wanderer, there is no road, the road is made by walking. By walking one makes the road, and upon glancing behind one sees the path that never will be trod again. Wanderer, there is no road– Only wakes upon the sea.”
― Antonio Machado, Campos de Castilla
We Make the Road by Walking. We in the United Church of Christ have often spoken about faith as a journey. We invite people to come join with by saying “no matter who you are, no matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” We have for the last fifteen years invited people to join us on our journey with our Stillspeaking God. To be on a journey of faith means that there is always more that God will reveal to you and about you. There is more that we can learn from studying the scripture, listening for the Spirit’s movement, and living out our faith in the world.
Yet sometimes we get caught in a safe path that our car or footsteps can trod without having to think about. This path is so well worn that we have stopped thinking about it. This year we want to take a look at the road we are walking on. We want to let the Spirit push and pull us into new roads for no matter how young or old we are God is not done with us. We make the Road by Walking.
Beginning this January, St. Paul’s will begin a year-long book study of Brian McLaren’s "We Make the Road by Walking." This year together will offer us a fresh way to experience and practice our faith. This book and our church study will help you read through the major stories of the Bible with brief commentary along the way to help connect what you’re reading with your daily living. Each reading invites us to cultivate and honest, intelligent understanding of the faith that is challenging, stimulating, and encouraging. This study invites us to reimagine what it means to live joyfully and responsibly in today’s world as agents of God’s justice, creativity, and peace.
We will offer two classes on Wednesday 10:00am and 6:30pm. We will be handing out books in worship and the first day class meets. A donation of $14 is appreciated. You may also purchase a kindle copy. Come when you are able to either class. If you can’t make the class, read the book and scripture at home. And try out the practices and nudges of the Spirit.
Together, We Make the Road by Walking.
